The President intends to nominate Karen Johnson of Virginia to be Assistant Secretary of Education for Legislation and Congressional Affairs. Currently, Ms. Johnson is Vice President of Social Marketing and Public Affairs for Porter Novelli, where she provides strategic public affairs and communications counsel for a variety of clients. Prior to joining Porter Novelli, she was a fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communications. During the Republican National Convention in 2000, she served as the Assistant Convention Manager for Public Liaison. Ms. Johnson has traveled to Cambodia and Thailand, serving as an instructor of Political Communications and Public Relations with the International Republican Institute. She also traveled to China and Hong Kong to serve as a delegate for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. Ms. Johnson received her bachelor's degree in communications from Appalachian State University in North Carolina.
